What is the Story of the Chinese Zodiac? The Legend of The GREAT RACE ~ 1.40 min read

Legend has it that, back in the ancient days, the Jade Emperor, ruler of the heavens, ordered that animals would become part of the calendar and that the 12 who arrive first would be selected.
At the time, the cat and the rat were good friends. When they heard the news, the cat said to the rat: β€œWe should arrive early to sign up, but I usually get up late.”
The rat promised to wake his pal up so they could go together but, because he was so excited, forgot and went alone.
On the way, the rat bumped into the ox who is much faster than him.
He hatched a plan and convinced the ox to carry him on his back – on the condition that the rat sang throughout the journey.
πŸπŸ‚ There was a river just before the finish line. The ox was just about to cross the finish line when the rat jumped and took the first year of the Chinese calendar leaving the second year for the ox.
😾 Different story says the cat and the rat were together on the back of the ox when the rat pushed the cat when they were crossing the river.
🐯 The tiger struggled with the river but came third.
🐰 The Rabbit was clever and found some stones he can jump on in order to cross the river and came 4th.
🐲 The Dragon was the favourite to win the race since he can fly but stopped on the way to bring rain to a village in need.
🐍🐴 The horse was approaching next but the snake was around one of his legs with the poor horse not suspecting anything. The snake, just like the rat did, sneaked in front of the horse taking the 6th place and leaving the horse 7th.
🐐 🐡 πŸ“ The goat, monkey and rooster were approaching together using a team effort to cross the river. The Emperor allocated the places according to the amount of contribution everybody was putting into the team giving the 8th place to the goat, 9th to the monkey and 10th to the rooster.
🐢 The dog arrived late as it stopped to have a bath in the river and the pig 🐷 came last as it stopped to eat on the way and fall asleep after that, waking up just in time to finish the race.
😿 And the cat.. By the time the cat arrived, the selection was over – which is why the cat hates the rat.

  1. I had no idea bout this legend. I like it very much. Seems that snakes and rats are not much liked in many cultures. πŸ‘Ž I think the most interesting is the dragon. In English culture, he’s a fierce and greedy hoarder of treasure. Here, he’s quite the kind charity worker. πŸ‘I’m happy to find out more about dragons in different cultures. Thanks for the interesting post, CP. πŸ‘

      1. I always remember when I was a child, reading Rupert the Bear. He had a Chinese friend who had a secret lift all the way to China, from England. Rupert took the lift and they gave him a dragon to ride back home on, so he was friendly! I still love that story. πŸ‘
