Bulgarian National FOOD & DRINK: Foreigners Taste Rakia & Shopska salad ~ 1 min read

First of all what is rakia? If you are in Bulgaria and find yourself in a domestic environment, chances are you’ll hear the people living there talking about it. Rakia is a drink. So commonly used that we can call it Bulgarian National Drink.

Alongside with the rakia that you can buy in the supermarkets, many people also produce it for themselves. You know… homemade taste better 😉
Usually made out of plums 🍑 or grapes 🍇, you can make rakia out of everything that has sugar in it. Forgot to mention- rakia is an alcoholic drink. Usually goes around 40°C. Fermentation is involved. But I’m not gonna bore you with details here.

I invited a friend from Peru (Lucy) to try it for a first time. We ended up trying two types. See her reactions in this video ⬇️⬇️⬇️

Oh, yes.. there’s also a very nice salad that goes together with rakia. We call it SHOPSKA SALATA where SALATA means Salad. The name is linked with a region called Shopluk in the western part of Bulgaria but the salad itself was invented by chefs of Balkanturist- Bulgaria’s first tour operator. In 1970s and 1980s the salad becomes a National culinary symbol and from Bulgaria, the recipe spreads through the neighbouring countries. Because the area of Shopluk is divided among Bulgaria, Serbia and Macedonia, chefs in Macedonia and Serbia began later to contest the Bulgarian origin of the salad. It is widespread also in Romania under the name Bulgarian salad. In 2014 Shopska salad turned out to be Bulgaria’s most recognisable dish in Europe.

The salad has multiple variations but the main ingredients include are tomatoes, cucumbers, onion/scallions, raw or roasted peppers, sirene (white brine cheese), and parsley. Sunflower/olive oil, vinegar and salt are also added.

    1. Me personally .. I haven’t. But I remember when I was small and went with my father to help him. I remember staying in that room where you process it. I was getting drunk only by the fumes.
